My tale of the 2000 Grand Prix GTP:
I own a 00 GTP with 42,000 miles. About 6 months ago my car began stalling out. It stalled out on the highway, on normal roads, and at red lights. Sometimes it stalled out once a week, and sometimes three times a day. No distinct pattern. No Check Engine light. I had a guy take a look at it, and he replaced the control module. It didn’t stall out for a few months but then one day it stalled on me again. This time, however, my Check Engine light came on, so I took it to AutoZone and had them diagnose it. The computer was giving a mass airflow sensor error readout. I had the mass airflow sensor changed, but it started stalling the very next day. Then I took it to a shop and after a full week of testing and diagnostics, the reply: “Everything is working properly, all sensors good, CAM perfect, can’t get it to repeat problem”. I was driving yesterday and it stalled again. This time I changed the fuel filter. Could the fuel filter be causing this problem? Also, could it be a fuel speed control module? Please advise because I am really starting to get sick of this problem, and I do not want to sell my Grand Prix. |

Re: 2000 GTP Stalls Out
I think it is your Crank Position Sensor
It did this on my 1999 GTP and I could never get the SES light to show up....until one day I took it to the dealership for an unrelated problem they came to me and ask if I had a kill switch in it....I looked at them puzzeled and asked "why?" they told me tht my car has stalled out and they could not get it to start....I started laughing because I have taken it to them several times in the past and they always said the car was in good shape..... I told them this always happens when I am driving down the highway or coming to a stop.....they did some investigating after they said it wasnt throwing any codes(which they said it would/should) They changed the CPS....car never had anymore problems after that! |

i have had 2 cps installed,it keeps on doing this..we are going to try putting another control mod and a computer on..if this does not cure the prob then i will unload the car..i need good and reliable transportation..this is turning into a pain in the a$$

Re: 2000 GTP Stalls Out
Well if the car stalls id beacuse at any given time the most important combustion fluids do not reach enough or soon enough to the combustion chamber. Air and Fuel. First of all, make sure that the TB intake mout is free of dirt. Sometimes a dirty tb plate border or housing border could cause an herratic idle or stalling. Secondly make sure the air filter is clean and make sure that at least 55+ lbs of fuel is getting to the injectors. After you make sure that all these are working properly the car would start behaving normally again.

55 lbs?....your fuel doesnt need to be that high!

Re: 2000 GTP Stalls Out
I do not remember the exact number but was not 25lbs. It was higher than 45. What is important that she gets good fuel pressure to the injectors and that all is gum/dirt free. If you know the exact OEM fuel lbs can you please kind enough to share it with us

Re: 2000 GTP Stalls Out
I was thinking about changing the crank sensor, and now I will probably do that. If it isn’t the crank sensor, however, then I probably should take it to the dealer, but I’m not sure how much help they would be:
If the SES light is not on, and I can’t get the problem to repeat, then will the dealer be able to find out what is wrong? Also, pardon my ignorance, but what is the TB Intake? |

Re: 2000 GTP Stalls Out
I have heard of a new theory for this problem: There is too much moisture in the gas tank, and adding water remover to the gas will remedy that.
This actually sounds believable to me because of the fact that no errors are showing up when I get it diagnosed. Does this sound reasonable to anyone else?? Has anyone ever heard of this excess moisture to cause a car to stall? |

i had the same exact problem, and it ended up being a problem with the wiring running from the fuel pump. you might want to drop your gas tank and check it out. mine got to the point to where it wouldn't even start, but now it's fine and hasn't stalled since.

Good luck to u
. We have a 2000 Grand Prix with the same problems . Initially, the trac light came on. Then the trac light would come on and the tac would go to 0. Later both of these would happen and the car would just stall. We had a new computer put in which cost $350 including the inital time we took it and they hooked car up to analyzer which cost $30. Thursday we had a new ignition mudule installed which cost $200. We still have the problem .Now the garage has the car and is considering the crank shaft sensor which after reading this forum I'm sceptical. ?Do we keep putting money in to a car which no one (dealer or garage) seems to be able to fix or do we unload it and buy a new one. We love the car but this is getting a bit irritating and costly. We've been dealing with this since spring of 06. |

Re: 2000 GTP Stalls Out
Blauryn8,
Welcome to AF. Please check the date of the thread and last post. We prefer that old threads over 3 months old (this one is well over two years old) are not resurrected. If you have an issue you would like to address and possibly get resolved then start a new post. In reply to your problem. Get the crankshaft position sensor replaced! Thread closed.
