Turning DRL Off On 99 1500

i have a 99 1500 with the auto headlights. i have searched the board unsecussfully finding a way to turn my headlamps off at night. the only thing i can do is toggle the parking brake foot pedal but i cant seem to get this to work after i have had the vehicle in drive. i tried the dome override switch, maybe iw as doing it wrong or does the dome override switch not disable them. any help would be greatly apperciated. thanks

On my dad's 03 all you have to do is flip the headlights button from automatic to the open circle and they turn off.

I haven't been able to find a way to do this on my 99 either. On the 2000s and up all you have you to do is press the cargo lamp button like 3 times and they turn off. But it doesn't work on the 99s and I don't think there is any way to do so.

R&D Automotive makes a Headlight override switch that plugs into the BCM underneath your dash. I have it on my 99 Silverado and I love it. The switch lets you toggle between using the lights manually while on, or if you have it off the headlights are controlled by the sensor. It looks completely stock mounting in the blank spot next to your Air bag switch. Only thing is...it's $90. I got tired of not having control of my own headlights so I went ahead and paid the $90. Worth it though. The kit comes complete with everything you need, not to mention step-by-step directions with pictures.

I shouldn't have said "plugs". You have to splice into a few wires, but the kit comes with some handy 3M wire connectors so there isn't any cutting of wires involved, which is a good thing. Cutting wiring on these new trucks always makes me nervous.

Lightbulb How To Turn Off Your Headlights At Night.

If You Look In Your Owners Manual It Will Tell You That If You Have Your Light Switch Off And The Lights Are On Auto, Set Your Park Brake And The Light Will Go Out.

Smile Re: Turning DRL Off On 99 1500

after starting the truck push the dome overide switch 4-5 times....you will hear the chime. your dlr running lights/headlights should go out. it works on my 2k silverado. howevever when you restart you will need to go thru the procedure again.

hope this helps....

the dome override button doesn't work on the 99's either. I was told that unplugging the sensor on the front center of the dash would work, but that doesn't work either. The R&D kit is the only thing that I've found to work.

i dunno what chevy was thinking when they didn't put in a switch to turn the lights off. there is no way for me to turn off the lights when on in my 99 silverado at night except to turn the truck off.....the only way i can get them off is if i start it up with the e-brake on....off course with the 2000 and on you can turn them off and on as you please.....

I disabled mine but it wasn't easy. I hunt and want to be able to run my engine to stay warm without the lights on.

I removed the sensor in the dash but then the truck behaves like it is dark all of the time and the lights come on when the engine is on.

Since the sensor is just a photodiode, I stacked up a few diodes in series (from radio shack) one at a time (3 or 4 switching diodes) until the lights stayed off.

Please do this at your own risk.

Re: Turning DRL Off On 99 1500

A friend had the same problem with an Olds of his. We tried removing the sensor, but as others said it just made the car think it was dark all the time and kept the headlights on. The solution is to close the circuit (pulling out the sensor just keeps it open), which can be done like 99Garbage suggested. Or, you can simply cut the two wires leading to the base that the sensor plugs into and splice those wires together, which completes the circuit. Now the truck thinks that it's always light out and doesn't automatically turn on the headlights.

That's how I plan on permanently disabling the automatic headlights on my '02 Z71 when I get around to it. To disable the daytime running lamps, which are different from the automatic headlights, I just removed the DRL bulbs (that was the very first thing I did when I got the truck home a few months ago).

Same disclaimer, do this at your own risk.
