so he ran a wire from the brakes to the center piece, and drilled a hole in the back so the "civic" part would light up is my guess.

If you got clear taillights and tinted them it would probably have a transparent center piece. You would probably have to cut out some metal on your hatch so you could get lights behind the center piece. Take something hard like maybe plexiglass and drill holes in it in the Civic shape. Fill it with Leds and wire them up to the brake lights.

ive seen on ebay that some guy sold a while back that the CIVIC in the mid part of the tails light up. dunno if u will be able to find them again tho, not so sure...

that guy had a how-to i read that along time ago but i forgot what it said and where i saw it it might still be up somewhere

It's LED's. Something like 250 of them that the guy had to wire in there... I don't have the link for the how-to anymore, but it should be pretty easy to figure out.
