1962 Shelby Cobra CSX2001
It was great and inspiring to be back to the AMCE ATL NNL last weekend.
I have my sights set on getting two models done for the next show. One will be a Ferrari 250 TR and the other will be this Cobra. One of the themes for the show for next year is 50 years of the Cobra, so I am going to make the first production Cobra, the CSX2001 now owned by Bruce Meyer in California. The Ferrari I would like to have done for the Birmingham show in March I think it is and the Cobra will fittingly get its public debut at the ACME show. A fellow ACME member, Bill Cunningham, had started this model and decided I could finish it for him. A little collaboration if you will. After I finished the Twin Turbo Cobra, I had said I would do another one in a little more detail which was the start of the discussion on me taking over this car. I am going to nail the 1:1 car. I love the details and this one is going to get them all. ![]() Disclaimer: none of the work on this car to date was done by me. Rims have been turned on a lathe and drilled out for the knockoffs. They will be painted in the semigloss black as on the 1:1 car. ![]() There is great detail in the chassis. I am going to add a little more with some PE nuts, bolts, and all that and additional plumbing and wiring. ![]() The doors have been very cleanly and have magnets in them to fit with the magnets in the seats to provide a nice tight close. These things work seamlessly and fit perfectly. ![]() Here is a shot with open doors. Notice that nice brass windshield frame. I am thinking that will get a little copychrome action that Dirk told me about years ago in Atlanta. ![]() The CSX2001 is a 289 (not 427) and the exhaust is slightly different than what bill has already made. I think the brass will get used on the new car, but the copper pieces will be scrapped unfortunately. The 2001 does not have the exhaust exiting through the body nor does it have the gills so those holes will be filled in and the fuel door also gets relocated. ![]() Look at this work of art. The dash will have to be altered a little. Everything fits like a glove. ![]() Here it is all buttoned up. This is going to be a fun one! ![]() Thank you for looking! Andy |

I've been watching Bill work on this for years, true eye candy and glad he passed the torch on to you! Now you must get it done for the 2012 show

Re: 1962 Shelby Cobra CSX2001
I love the narrow fender 260's and 289's. One of our ACME members owns the real deal CSX 2499 '65 Cobra 289...38K original miles, Princess Blue w/red leather interior. Such a fun car! Makes my Miata feel big...and slow

Re: 1962 Shelby Cobra CSX2001
Andy-
If you're doing Meyer's car those Halibrands are wrong. Those are Cobra II's used on 427's. Meyer's are the FIA magnesium wheel, but actually probably a Trigo aluminum replica. Also, the front flairs and rear of door to fender transition will need attention. gixxer-Wrong-that's CSX 2000 in your picture being driven by John Christy for Road& Track in '62.

Re: 1962 Shelby Cobra CSX2001
Andy,
Before you invest a great deal of effort, if you truly plan to 'nail' Meyer's car, would it not be wiser to begin with a small nose, narrow body and chassis 289 model? That 427 is very nicely done but far from 2001. It would be ideal for a 3008 project or a street 427.

Re: 1962 Shelby Cobra CSX2001
Thank you for all of the interest!
Alvin, thank you for the comments! Merlin, I should have clarified, I want to nail the details of the CSX2001, I know there are going to be some differences that I was aware of and some that I was not. Here is my disclaimer, like I gave with the TTCobra, my Slayerrera, the FXX motorcycle: I am going to take some modelers liberties to ensure I have fun with this one and get it done. It wont be the exact CSX2001 replica, but I will do Bill's initial work justice as well as do justice to the CSX2001. Warning for example: the engine is going to start as the 427 out of the Revell kit and I am just going to call it a 289 and put the weber carbs on there and add all the details I see from my reference pictures. Hell, they might not even be weber carbs on this engine, I dont know. It may drive some crazy or even be blasphemous, but I am fine with it and it will be fun. I stopped at Hobby Lobby on the way home to get some resin casting materials and took a little time at work to collect some reference pictures to replicate the carbs on this engine. I have a few different velocity stacks from some other builds and am ready to start on the engine as well as the bodywork with the fuel filler relocation. The carbs will be scratch built (one) and then cast in resin. Maybe I will put some out on eBay when they're done. This build is going to take a year and be combined with the Ferrari 250TR so thank you for your patience and I am going to go get building! Thank you all again! Andy |

Here are Webers on a 427 for your 289/427. Remember to tilt the intake flanges inboard 10 degrees (stacks toward each other at the top) so as to fit under your scoop. Have fun:

Re: 1962 Shelby Cobra CSX2001
This is back on the table to get finished for Atlanta.
Here is the engine. I scratch built the coil and oil filter, and breathers on the valve covers. The valve covers are the kit ones reshaped to resemble the ones on the actual car. The carbs are from HRM through Strada. I scratched the fuel delivery with RBMotion pieces chopped up and some other parts box pieces. You cant tell it too much, which is the key, nice and subtle, but there more than 80 photoetch nuts, bolts, and washers on the engine. The wiring is about to get added as well as fuel plumbing. ![]() ![]() This thing better hurry up! Andy |
