Ferrari 330 P4 (HRM - PE upgrade)

Distractions distractions.....................

The GT40 isnt getting built while I look at my latest purchase....

Fujimi 1/24 Ferrari 330 P4
Historic Racing Minitures engine detail kit (superb quality and loads of bits)
PE upgrade (require for door removal more on that later)

I noticed there is already a P4 build (same kit/engine) and have been watching with much interest.... some superb detail going on there.

So with a fresh kit the first thing to do was.......

(take some photos of the build cos this thread is useless without them...)

Will post progress to date and the important pictures later tonight (GMT)

Andy

Re: Ferrari 330 P4 (HRM - PE upgrade)

OK pictures.........

First remove bonnet and rear clip, I use a new knife and break the last 0.5mm off and then use the reverse of the blade to gently scribe the parts apart following the panel lines. Watch out for the 45 degree end cut on the rear and the 'notch' where the front wheel arch meets the body.

The HRM upgrade has loads of parts.... here is the engine.

It fits into the fujimi chassis...

...and you can see the fujimi engine sump, this will have to be removed and put onto the HRM engine.

The firewall dosent fit to well when fitted look at where the cockpit meets the firewall. Also the engine slots into the HRM firewall and the firewall hole will need enlarging to allow the firewall to sit at the correct angle.

I wanted to scribe off the doors but with very thin plastic I was unsure about where to correctly scribe so had to wait for the PE upgrade to arrive and use that as the outline for the window. Will leave it for now as delicate parts break to easy....ask me how I know....

The fujimi rear suspension was very fragile and I broke it (butter fingers) so drilled a hole and will use a 14 BA brass bolt to screw the rear suspension into the rear hoop. I will also cut away the lower trailing arm and use brass rod or tube.

Also trial fitted the disc brakes.....my first go at cutting/losing/cursing/stabbing with PE parts.

I havent started on this stuff yet.....

The garage is getting crowded......

and just becasuse I can.............

So the plan is to recreate the chassis tube by tube. I have the tube in brass and will probably glue the components together rather than use solder. I have visions of a nearly completed tube chassis and seeing it fall apart when adding more parts if soldered.

I also need to add correct engine mount lugs and will build the chassis from the engine forwards to ensure that its in the correct place.

Re: Ferrari 330 P4 (HRM - PE upgrade)

Hi Andy, Nice start! I had some heartburn over that HRM firewall too. Not sure why Harold did the part all in one plane but it's easily remedied. I noticed that the firewall above the sill should recline so the plane of the rear window glass is vertical but, the portion of the firewall below the sill-line needs to also be vertical. I think the easiest way to fix it is to scribe a bend line on the back of the firewall at the sill-line and just bend it back 10-15 degrees so when the rear glass is installed it is flush with the body.

Good luck with the build. The P4 is hard to detail because there isn't a lot of documentation out there and when photographed the car hides it's charms under louvers and baffles. In my build there is a link to a Ferrari Chat thread. A fellow stripped a real one down to the tubes and built it back up taking photos the whole time. I found it incredibly helpful in getting all the bits sorted.

I've enjoyed the work you've done on your GT-40. I hope we'll see more of that one too.

Mike

Re: Ferrari 330 P4 (HRM - PE upgrade)

Great start Andy.

Surely will be helpful for details to look at the pdf file Jim J6 made for the ricostruction of his 846,also cause p4's are all different one to another.

Meanwhile I look at my 1/12 Mg model plus here near....wonder if in this life I will found the courage to build it..

Re: Ferrari 330 P4 (HRM - PE upgrade)

I have the Paolo Marasa 330/P4 book. There are some engine bay pics and several detailed exterior/interior (skin on) pics of the restored P4. Unfortunately there aren't any frame/chassis pics. I have about 50 general jpgs. and the old large Shell Oil cutaway drawing (also small version in jpg form). I can't scan everything as I do have a life but I can send the jpgs and/or scan a few detailed pics if you have a specific need.

In case you hadn't guessed the 330/P4 is one of my all time favorites.
