There is an after market 3L probe motor that not many people have ventured into that is the 220hp 200tq SHO out of a taurus. That was believed to be the largest motor able to be put in the probe until I came along.

Ive got a 1st gen probe with the 3.0L in it. im not sure if its the fastest stock probe made, but from what ive looked up it should run 16-16.2 stock. ive seen a probe with a SHO motor swap in it. Im thinkin bout it myself but im not sure. there are also rumors of the 3.8L being dumped into the probes.

How does a KFZE 2.0L V6 engine compare to a FE3? How much power would a KFZE w/turbo have? I've seen some diagnostics where an FE3 turbo has around 260 hp and about 270 lb/tor. Price wise, is an FE3 worth it compared to the KRZE?
Btw, My 93 ford probe SE runs 75 mph at about 3200 rpm.. I often find myself shifting down to 4th to accelerate heavily to pass granny mobiles though small 4 cyl |

If you are thinking about doing the SHO motor swap check this site out
http://www.harborside.com/~lhumbert/probepg.html although it hasnt been updated in a while it will tell you a little. Also I talked to the guy that opend that site and is doing the project, he is having a hard time with it and said that he wouldnt recommend that swap because all of the service parts are discontinued and as of yet there are very very few performance parts...even fewer than the probe....If you can believe that. And what 3.8L are you talking about? |

The 3.8L is the motor from the cougar/t-birds. The SHO motor is the biggest ive heard put in the probe without any frame moddifications. Th e3.8L i beleve would require some firewall and fender fixin. There are some pychos out there that are trying to put 5.0s in there probes , but to me that is just wayyyy too much work. By the way im talking bout the 1st gen. probes and swaps, im not to sure if the 2nd gen engine bays are the same size.

Re: is it worth moddifying a probe?
wtf, why does my probe run at 4k rpm's in 5th gear going 80? it's a 6 cyl. is it just that im at a high elevation, or is there something wrong w/ the engine/trans? thanks

Re: is it worth moddifying a probe?
wow.. that's wierd dude.. but my 2.0L 4 cyl 1993 SE was at 5k rpms in 5th going 110. (btw... 110 seems to be top speed for my stock '93 SE) its about 3.2k rpm at 70mph in 5th....
Question... what would be someones recommendation for an engine/turbo for my '93 Probe SE if I'm wanting around 220 hp? How much would you estimate costs to be? Thanks in advance! |

Don't confuse generations!
1) The first-gen Probe (1989-1992) had three engines: base Mazda 2.2 four, Mazda 2.2 turbo four, or Ford 3.0 V6 (from the Taurus). Because it has Taurus engine mounts, any 1986-1995 Taurus motor - including the SHO V6 and the big 3.8 V6 - can be stuffed under the Probe hood with some other modifications. However... 2) The second-gen Probe (1993-1997) had two engines: base Mazda 2.0 four or Mazda 2.5 V6. These, then, are limited strictly to Mazda engines unless you're super-talented as an engineer or have more money than God. Most common swap here is for the 200hp J-spec KL-ZE 2.5 V6, though you could also go for a supercharged KL by using bits from a Mazda Millenia. However, the Millenia charger tends to have a very short lifespan, requiring a major rebuild or replacement (both being expensive) sometime after 60k miles. I'd say stick with the Probe and look for the KL-ZE. With enough tuning and weight reduction, you'll kill the average 3000GT - they're awfully heavy and just slightly under-motored for their size.
