my mk3 96 gti dies intermtantly???

Hi people,
wonder if anyone can help. recently my golf gti 20ltr 8v 96 mk3 has developed a strange problem, she will run perfectly for about 10 miles(on a long run) then i lose all power but anywhere between 1 min an 20 mins she will start again. this doesnt just happen on a long run, it can happen any time. ive had it in my local vw specialists who are stumped.. ive changed,

fuel filter
dissy cap
leads
power pack (coil)

its been on there scanner for about 5 hours , nothing happend seems to happen when under load as when i drove home about 2 miles from them it happend 3 times..

can anyone help i would much appreciate it

do you mean engine power or electrical power?

if electrical i would check your fuel pump fuse and power supply fuses.

Hi veedub.. its an electrical fault i think , it just dies no warning, but on some occasions seems to lose power then get a burst then dies sometimes she starts straight away but i have been known to wait about 25 mins, bit of a t**t at trafic lights. someone told me it was the power supply relay , only to find its a common fault.... if you own a mk4.. an i own a mk3 so peter cooper (the local dealership) tell me i dont have one? would appreciate any input

i believe there is a power supply relay, and i think its in the engine compartment.. i forget would have to look at a wiring diagram..

Try replacing relays 30 and/or 67 under the steering wheel above the fuses. does it try just click off? my 8v gti does it and the vw mechanic was baffled after replacing these relays and a coil pack to no avail. worth doing these relays first though.
