drag racing engine or not?

Ok, no replies to my last post, but that's cool. I've been thinking and instead of using a factory motor and fixing it up, i was thinking about saving my money and getting an actual drag racing engine. this will be my first drag car, actually this is my first project car ever. I have really good feelings about it, i was just hoping to get some opinions here.

Re: drag racing engine or not?

i have a 87 dodge daytona. i was thinking about going with the 2.2L turbo and modding it, but then i thought about going with an actual drag racing engine. probably a chevy small block, don't know for sure what kind of drag racing engine i want though if i decide to go that route.

Re: drag racing engine or not?

a V8 isn't going to drop right in. Youll have to buy a whole RWD drivetrain including transmission and then you're in for a whole lot of modification of the body to make everything fit.

There are many 11 and 12 second Turbo dodges, there are even several running 9's and 10's. I think that you could get all that you are realistically looking at on a first drag car out of that engine.

Re: drag racing engine or not?

Thanks for your opinions and considering this is my first project i think i'm just going to go with the 2.2 turbo. I won't have to deal with as many mod's going this way. It's gonna take some work, but I'm really gonna enjoy gettin some power out of that 2.2.

Re: drag racing engine or not?

Well, it seems you have made your mind up already, but you may want to reconsider the SBC.

While its true that you'd have to get a new drive train and modify the engine compartment, you'll have alot more options (both with parts and power outputs) out of the SBC. The SBC would hold up better too.

You're going to drop as much money (if not more) building that 4-cylinder as you would in a 350 Chevrolet (or any small block really).

Anyways, just a suggestion. Good luck with your car however. One thing is for sure, going with the 2.2L Turbo will certainly be less common then building an SBC.

Re: drag racing engine or not?

Well, i'm still not sure, something will come along to make my mind up for sure. I'm kind of putting it off right now, i just got a good deal on a '84 Vette, gonna turn it into a show car. I just got an email from a guy and i gotta call him, but he's gonna give me some info on getting a fiberglass/carbonfiber body for the daytona. So as of right now, the SBC is outweighing the 2.2 Once i decide and get started i'll make a post and let ya guys know what i decided to do. only being home about 4 times a year is really making hard to get anything done though
