Starter broke off in engine
My starter broke off in the engine of my 2002 Camry 3.0 V6. The starter gear was stuck in the flywheel. And going by the 2002 Toyota's shop manual, i tried to remove the starter. But for some reason it would not come out. So i attempted to knock it out, with a piece of wood. And a hammer. That's when the top of the starter, broke off in the engine. This is the original starter, that has never been replaced. The only option i see right now. Is cutting into the engine. And try to remove the broken off piece. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Re: Starter broke off in engine
Okay, I got the rest of the starter out. I removed a few wires on top of the starter. You don't have to remove the metal part of the radiator hose. I first scribed around the outside of the starter piece. Then applied some Liquid wrench. Then cut 4 cuts, on the sides. And the top and bottom, from front to back. I used a Dewalt cordless reciprocating saw. I wish i had the one Milwaukee make, because it's shorter. Then i taped the cuts, with a chisel, to make sure the cuts. Were all the way though. Then i used a medium side flat tip screwdriver. To knock between the starter piece and motor housing. I saw the piece move. So I took a small vise grip pliers and attached it to the back of the steel starter plunger. And pulled the piece out.
If I had to do it again, I would have used the medium screwdriver. To tap between the starter piece and the motor housing. After using the liquid wrench first. Before trying anything else. Some aluminum particles may have gotten into the Transmission fluid, I am not sure. So i might change it later on. Last edited by kiway22; 08-30-2021 at 03:03 PM. Reason: to correct mistake. |
