Re: can you help me?

Forget the VK, they are leaded engines and with leaded fuel already phased out they will be extinct very shortly.

Best off getting a VL Commodore, with the EFI 3L 6 cylinder, this engine is called the RB30E. You can also transplant a VL Turbo motor or a variety of other import turbo motors, including the Nissan Skyline GTR 2.6L Twin Turbo motor. There are plenty of VL Commodores beating Subaru WRX's and even new V8 HSV Commodores.

The VL Commodore, with a set of extractors, 2.5" exhaust and a decent tune up should smoke your mates Escort. The VK would lose out no matter what you do to it.

VL's are also reasonably cheap, so crap ones are under $500 but decent examples are under $2000 and most have the extractors and exhaust fitted.
