Push in the right direction
I'm trying to find a fast car that will beat my friends mitsubishi 3000. My budget in anywhere from 5k-8k, would like a RWD and a car that wont need much TLC or mechanic work on my part.
I am looking at porsches 944 or 928, though i am not sure how much matinece on older porsches with high milages would cost. Same with BMW's 3-series Any sugestions would help me out greatly. Thank you |

Re: Push in the right direction
Is the 3kgt the base model or VR4? If base, there are quite a few options out there in that price range.
Some older BMW 540s could do it, and in fashion, as could like 95 BMW M3s. If the words "mechanic" and "budget" come up, you should stop considering porsche right there. On occassion old Grand Nationals can be found in that price range it would smoke the base and would give the VR4s a run for their money. There are a million firebirds/camaros that would do it, if you want GM you could easily get an old body of like a Monte Carlo even and do an engine swap. Of course there are also a bunch of pre-94 mustangs that you could get in that price with an engine swap already done that would absolutely destroy it or stock 94+ mustangs (preferably 96, I think) that would annihilate it. Hell, just based on the numbers I found, a 90-93 Infiniti Q45 would be a base. Also a variety of other highway cruisers (lincoln mark VIII, caddy STS, etc). Also against the base a Lexus SC300/400 could beat it. You could find a number of tuned cars in that price range like engine swapped 240s. So there are a lot of options out there if this is your only goal. |

Re: Push in the right direction
Porsche 928's are incredibly expensive to maintain and hard to work on. They were true supercars when new and suck money like one today.
944's are not as bad, but still more in maintenance than say a 240SX or Miata

Re: Push in the right direction
If you got the car for 3G, you could probably give it a complete overhaul for about 8G(just performance wise).
But is the 3000GT base or the VR4?

Re: Push in the right direction
Since it's a base 3KGT, I just want to know if you want to beat him or blow his doors off, because you could get a bone stock LT1 Camaro (93-97) and blow his doors off, or if you just want to beat him you have a lot of options.

Re: Push in the right direction
my friend is a huge "trash" talker and makes fun of any car i think about buying. I want to completely kill him in a race, and have him finally shut up about his 3000 and how fast it is.
Please someone tell me how to do this |

Re: Push in the right direction
Mustang GT and LT1 camaros or trans ams would smoke him to the point he would shut up and be under your budget (although you may find people on here claiming wins over them, but they are clearly either liars, misinformed with what they are racing, or the other driver was horrible).
There are literally hundreds of cars that could beat it. The base models just aren't fast. I mean, a 88 Honda CRX SI would be neck and neck with it. Why don't you give an actual class of cars you are considering. You list porsche and then list 3 series BMWs... Do you want luxury? Trucks? SUVs? Sport compact? 2 seaters? If beating his car is your only concern, you have many many options. |
