Exclamation State Sales Tax

We are buying a car overseas through our AAFES Military car sales and I have the option to register it in my home state of West Virginia or our next station Scott AFB Illinois. Does anyone know which state has the lower sales tax?

That may not be the only thing to look at. Don't forget to check tag fees, insurance requirements and personal property taxes...

Angry

Also don't forget - If you pay another state's sales tax on the car, and, bring it into WV at some future date, you'll have to pay sales tax on it again. One of my kids just moved back here from Texas and got hit with this on her 1year old car.

Re: State Sales Tax

Hey Oldengineer was your daughter military? There's a soldier and sailor's act that says states can't double dip on vehicle tax. Also where in WV are you from? We are from Beckley. See this is the problem when you move around. Thank god for this clause. I have looked through DMV's and not all tell you this. Luckily this was on the military web site for Scott AFB. We were gonna try the pick it up in SC cause it's a flat $300, but we would get caught cause thats not our domicile state or new state that we would be serviced. You'd think since we bought it here in Turkey it would be tax free like our pay here, but I am buying a Chrysler Pacifica and I get to forego alot of the extra crap fees here and pay only the car cost so I am not only getting the current $3500.00 promotion rebate but another military discount. Saving me $5000.00 off the sticker price and get all rebates until we move.

No, daughter's not in military. She's an engineer for DuPont and was working at a plant in Texas. Recently they transferred her to a plant here. We live close to Charleston. My middle kid's in the Army though - he's a E7 with the 100 Division out of Fort Knox, Ky.

Best of Luck to you:
