timing belt broken

So my daughters timing belt finally gave way and broke while she was driving. I'm aware that this can bend valves. My question is this. Is my engine definitely toast (I'm sure a dealer will tell me that, just don't trust them) or is there a chance it might have survived somehow and I could just simply put a new belt and water pump on it myself and try to save a few bucks. I only paid $500 for the car. Body and interior is decent. A/C kicks ass and I just threw a bunch of new parts into it. Hate to junk it yet don't want to spend a lot to fix it either. Should I drain the oil and look for chunks of metal? Do a leak down test? Pull the head off and inspect the valves? It's a 1999 dodge neon sport, with a dual overhead cam. Are these non-interference engines?

A compression test can give you a good idea if the valves were bent (most likely given these are interference engines). If they are bent, just find a good used head, most likely around $100 from a junkyard or other forums. I might even have a couple of buddies that still have one. If you decide to repair it, change the idler pulley along with it as it can seize up and you'll be doing it all over again.

Well I'm thinking about doing an engine swap. I found a 2.4 liter dual overhead cam engine out of a 2002 Chrysler Sebring. I guess I'll start searching the forums for people who might have done this swap. I get the engine and tranny together for $500 and it's only got 90,000 miles on it. Thanks for your help.

Easier to use a motor up till 2000. The later models have a slightly different head port and manifold mounting configuration so you have to modify your intake and exhaust manifolds to use that motor. That does include the PT Cruiser. 2001 up also have a different oiling system and different oil filter locations.
