advancing timing. What do you set it to?

Ok, im going to visit my folks in SouthDakota next month and my pops has a timing light and tac. I want him to advance my timing for me but I am not sure exactly how far to go before getting any knocking. I need some number here, what should I set it to. Also do you just loosen the distributer and twist it towards the front of the car to advance and to the rear of the car to retard? And if I advance the timming that will give me a little more lower end power correct?

i know im not a honda owner but i know this advance it 2-3 degrees thats mostly what a chip does and there should be a line on the hormonic balancer and the and a plate that tells you the timeing marks there sould be a 0 and and lines in the + and - on there and you need to find out what the stock timeing is and advance it from there (if you run boost or n2o do not do this)
