Danged tracker!!!
Question. All electrics work on my '96 1.6L auto but the starter says nothing, zip. Put a new starter on and it cranked for a while and then the same old symptoms came back. Started every time, then usually started, then maybe start and then nothing. I crossed over the 2 lugs on the starter solenoid and I hear the motor spinning but the bindex doesn't kick in. Am I trying the wrong thing?!?

Re: Danged tracker!!!
Chances you got a bad starter. Autozone, and typical places quite often sell you inferior starters. Go to a "REAL" auto parts store and get another. Yup ! you will probably pay a little more but you will get a quality starter.
You should get a refund for the defective one. The old saying "you get what you pay for" very well apply. The cheaper rebuilders only replace the defective part they first find. They test it and it works, but for how long. Quality rebuilders check every part and replace them, including bushings and bearings. On the electrical on my cars , trucks, and motorcycles I take the part to an automotive electrical shop and have it rebuilt. I tell them, replace bearing, bushings, brushes, everything. |

Re: Danged tracker!!!
Have been in the same place with Autozone starter and alternator. Took the starter back for refund. Was in a tight spot on a long trip when I had to buy the alternator but it lasted long enough to get me home before it crapped out. Returned it for refund also. Two items that shouldn't be cheaped out on.

Re: Danged tracker!!!
Dont forget to make sure that you battery has enough cranking amps to turn the starter over. That often gets mistaken for a bad starter so if you are getting items checked get that checked as well.
