Question 840 Ci Can't cancel theft alarm

My baby son deposited the master key into the dishwasher and we only realised after they got cleaned. The key is ruined but I have a spare (without the remote entry function). Acoording to the user manual if I use the manual key to open the car door the alarm will go off (It did), but the manual goes on to say that you can cancel the alarm by starting the engine (not so!). In fact the alarm continues and the engine starter will not engage, the car remains immobilised. This is a typical example of BMW antitheft not operating as the handbook says.

Problem 1 is that I can't drive the car now.

Problem 2 is that once I get the new key (with remote function) it apparently needs to be initialised with the car. According to the handbook you can only initialise a new key if the car was first opened using the remote (mine was opened with the key due to the remote being dud). Apparently if you open the car with a key then only the dealer can initialise the new key - trouble is, I can't start the car to drive it to the dealer.

Does anyone know how to get out of this catch 22?
