Manual STICK Shift Often Locking Requiring Force to Shift
Hello,
I have a 95 Nissan Maxima. At 180,000 mile the clutch was changed and ran well. I now have 226,500 miles. Recently the manual shift locks while the car is running on the road. If forced, the manual shift will engage, at least into 2nd, and sometimes 3rd and 4th (not 5th). While turning the car off and on again the shift unlocks (good for a few miles (5-10 miles)). When the car runs....it runs well....shifting, clutch etc..is normal. However the problem is getting worst. My time and unfortunately my funds (not working) are low and my mechanic wants $200 just to open the transaxle to tell me what is wrong. Can this be the Shift Linkage & Lever Assembly? Has anybody seen this problem before? Your help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. My apologies for not being specific (my 1st post).....It is a manual 5 speed transmission. This has baffled my local mechanic. I will probably have to drop it off to be inspected by a local transmission place. They think because it can drive fine at times it could be the hydraulic slave or master cylinder in the system and they estimate with out looking at it that it may run about $200 to repair. Thanks........... Last edited by Mech_Head; 06-25-2003 at 10:19 AM. |

He said the clutch was changed at 180,000 miles, that means stick.
It could be several things, but whatever it is, you are going to have to pull the tranny, at minimum. Best to get it fixed when you can still drive it, rather than being caught stranded somewhere.
