Porsche 935 1976 Martini Racing aka Jazz
Ooowwww... never been here before. Well not as a motorsports modeler at least
Normally I build road cars, but this car is special. Those who have looked at the title can already see where this is going. Sort of... Yes I'm creating the Porsche 935 from 1976 driven by Jacky Ickx. The car that was used as inspiration for my favorite toyline and 80's series; Transfomers. This build is going to be the real car, but in my heart it will always be Jazz Some real life references And of course some pictures of Jazz himself. And an example of the toy in its car (or Alt) mode. This is an old kit for sure. Plastic feels old and thick, but it fits lite only Tamiya can provide. Nice and snug. So... keeping de model simple. Just cleaning up the parts and make sure it looks good as a true curbside model. Sanding seams, scribing panel lines, removing the fastener clips... Than a simple primer coat. And here is where I stepped away from true OOB... those rims. There are awful. A small hour in Blender and the rim centers are coming up nicely. Next time... the rest of the rims. |

Re: Porsche 935 1976 Martini Racing aka Jazz
The kit wheels aren't bad, except for the fact that the spokes are closed. So I used those measurements to create these new ones that are open.
So the strange ridge on the outside of the rim corresponds with the inside of the Tamiya tire, to keep it in place. I'll be doing a test print soon, to make sure all fits nicely. What remains are the central wheel nut and the enormous rear wheel |

Re: Porsche 935 1976 Martini Racing aka Jazz
I've printed the first test and it is already looking very nice.
I do need a couple minor adjustments, like: - The wheel centers have no fixture to the rim... I completely forgot - The open wheel nuts are too fragile and not printed nicely. I need to increase the wall thickness/reduce the center hole. - The outside of the rim that goes into the tire is a bit too thick and needs to be reduces slightly. And obviously I wat to give it a test fit, so see if the suspension attachment is of appropriate size. |

Re: Porsche 935 1976 Martini Racing aka Jazz
I did the rework necessary and ran another print of the parts. Happy with the result and all is now prepared for primer, that will bring out if there are any imperfections left that need attention.
The central open wheel nuts (left) on the wheel rims that was reworked. I've also added in a bit more 'curve' to reduce the visible lines. This is my biggest concern, but we'll know after the primer coat. The body had its first coat of Carrera white. There were a few specs of dust (I had been working in the workshop before I started painting) that I had to sand out using 800 grid waterproof sanding paper. Next up will be another coat of white and a thin coat of gloss as a foundation for the decals. |

The body looks perfect!
Always loved Martini livery and I have a feeling this will turn out to be a good one!

Re: Porsche 935 1976 Martini Racing aka Jazz
I sprayed the interior parts (no picture).
And I worked on the decals. Trying to apply a large flat decal (or actually 4) to a curved surface. But the true horror comes when applying decal solutions. :| After a while things start looking much more promissing. I'm going to apply some more solution to the decals to even them out some more. And in the meantime I can continue the work the interior parts. Last edited by Deathtrap; 04-12-2023 at 02:46 AM. |

Re: Porsche 935 1976 Martini Racing aka Jazz
With the decals either soaking in softener or drying, I started spaying the rims.
I really like these new rims. Perhaps I could have very lightly sanded the insides of the rims to remove the tiny print lines too. But for now this is perfectly fine. |

Almost all decals have been applied, time for a quick view on how it is turning out.
And obviously it is on its new wheels Although these cartograph decals are stunning, I did spot a few minor flaws. Mainly due to the size. Some are every so slightly too big. For this build, I won't be to bothered and I will finish the model as is. |

I've given the model its first coat of gloss. I will very lightly sand it with some waterproof sanding paper and then apply the final gloss coat and polish it.

Re: Porsche 935 1976 Martini Racing aka Jazz
I had to gather some courage to start masking the whole car and paint the window seals. But I love the result of the high contrast black and white look.
After that, I started attaching the little detail parts. On the nose I've added some BMF. The two top corners on the hood still need to be done and then I will apply some fasteners made from PE. I've printed the racing harness parts And earlier I'd received my seat belt ribbon from a local crafts store. Bone cheap and exactly the same as you can by from scale modeling shops. Re: Porsche 935 1976 Martini Racing aka Jazz
I managed to finish the 935/76 yesterday. A simple and very old kit, but still a lot of fun building this. I deliberatly kept it simple and did not go all overboard. Together with Jazz, it is quite the couple on display
I'll drop some more pics in the Complete section. A few minusses: - The decals on the fenders I didn't get a 100% smooth. Next time I will be just masking and airbrusing those. - A few specs of dust in the paint, but I didn't dare to go heavier on the polishing. The risk of burning through the paint and damaging the decals beyond repair isn't worth it. - And the kit is simple. No real engine of bottom detail, no suspension or any detail to the air intakes. My additions: - New designed and printed rims - racing mesh in the front grill - Emergency switches for power and fire extinguisher near the front windshield - Racing harness - Replaced the molded quick releases on the front lid with PE.
