Unhappy 98 Passat

My son has a 98 Passat (standard) he just got back from MAACO for front end driver side corner work (swerved to avoid rear ending a car and clipped other car rear bumper with his left front corner). Anyway, got the car back and had bugger of a time shifting (especially into reverse). Made sure fluids were at correct levels, following morning seemed to shift better but sticks sometimes. Today while driving to Christmas with his daughter in car he lost power steering when turning onto our street and pressing brakes. Said it only happened that once on the way there but on the way back it happened almost every time he stepped on the brakes. Anyone have any ideas? Does it sound like a brake fluid leak? Clutch going? Any ideas? Thanks and happy holidays.
