fan clutch strange?

My mother's 95 Marquis was in the shop 18 mos. ago. The tech said it needed a new fan clutch. So I told my Mom it was cheap and go ahead with it. When she got the car back she complained to me that the engine made roaring sounds all the time. I (stupidly) told her it was just the new sound of the now-working fan and it was no big deal. She literally drives to church, grocery, doctor only, and the car never gets warm or really driven. Well I just borrowed the car for a week while I fix mine and this fan clutch is really screwed up. It DOES roar like a jet engine and it really robs the engine of power. Then it will stop (release) for no reason until the next stoplight. Then it will roar again even if you've been driving the car for an hour. I've never heared anything like it. It sounds like you have the accelerator floored, but it's the fan. It acts the same when the car is dead cold or really hot. Pulling away from a dead stop is the worst.

The repair is obviously too old to hold the shop accountable (my fault). Should I just try another new clutch or is there something else that is making it engage and hold at wierd times? BTW the old clutch never made the car run hot, if it was faulty as the shop claimed.

Re: fan clutch strange?

Sounds to me like it's working just fine. Most old fan clutches stop engaging and just stay engaged all the time, I dont see this to be a problem unless the bearings are shot and cause the engine to vibrate. However her new fan clutch will save her some fuel.

Fan clutch could be bad

I had a 99 Chevy S-10 that did as you describe, and the fan clutch was defective. It had some sort of debris inside that was causing it to stick and roar, just like the old flex-fans hotrodders used back in the day. The truck was barely a year old when it did this. I replaced it, all was well. you may just need to get another fan clutch. FWIW, I did a fan clutch job on my moms Marquis, and it liked to stay engaged at first, but then it "broke in" and has functioned normally ever since. Good luck...

sounds like the clutch was bad from the start. the cluch should engage when needed. Not all the time. and not when engine is cold. I should not be difficult to change.
