seat belt warning light
i was hoping someone could tell me how to fix my seatbelt warning light. i have a 94' mustang gt and when i first crank my car each morning, the seat belt warning light comes on and stays on, but then when i park it and come back to it hours later i can crank it and it works fine. i was wondering if anyone knows what the heck is goin on with it and if there is a way to fix the problem...thanks for tha help.

I am speaking off the cuff.
There should be 2 wires coming from the seat belt. Normally they form a short when the seat belt is engaged. I would short the two wires together. I do not know for a fact. Normally I would get a multimeter in there and do some checks, but speaking from other cars that I seen, that is how they work.

Its a switch. They do weird stuff when the are not working properly.
Test it, and if that is not it, we'll go somewhere else down the line.

It will be in the buckle, the part that is mounted to the floor. There should be a couple of wires coming from it. Do you know how to ohms check it?
If not, go buy yourself a cheap little multi meter at radio shack, or home depot, and we'll teach ya

Time to break out the Multimeter and start probing. It shouldn't cost more than $15 U.S. dollars and you can use it for checking hearing aid batteries to rewiring wall sockets. |

what should the ohm meter read when i have the car turned on and the light is on??? will it be showing power or not reading anything at all?? Sorry for all the questions, but i'm new to the switches and sensors of modern cars, im used to the simplicity of the 60's and early 70's muscle cars and jeeps.

I.am not sure about this switch, but how I check it would be to isolate the switch. Follow the wires from the seat buckle, there should be a connector somewhere under the seat. Disconnect the wire from the rest of the circuit. Where you have it disconnected, hook the multi-meter leads to the side of the connector that is coming from the buckle. Turn the multi meter into the ohms position.
(Ohms is a reading of resistance, meaning if its an open you will read an infinite amount, take the leads and place them together, this is a short, this is where you should zero ohms. Never apply voltage to a multi meter that is in the ohms position.) Not sure if you should read a short or an open, but I would think it should be a short, when you click the seat belt into the buckle the multi meter should go to an open. It could be vice versa. This is how I would check it. If the light is on, I would think there is a voltage on the line. But, every circuit can get the same result, but it electrically different
