81 El Camino V-6 carb problems

This thing is dumping gas. Can anyone give me a run-down of the extend of computer control of this? Normally I'd pull the carb and check it out, but could there be some other problem as to why its running so rich? Some sensor or other controlling part? It's bone stock, 231 V-6 with 2 bbl carb.

If it's the common E2SE carburetor, about the only thing the ECM can do is operate the mixture control solenoid to slightly adjust the idle mixture. If it's dumping gas, there's a chance that the inlet needle/seat are not sealingm the float is hanging up or contaminated and no longer floating, or the main metering well plugs are leaking.

Re: 81 El Camino V-6 carb problems

Thanks for the help. Did a carb kit and new float as well as a thorough cleaning and the car runs really good now. But it still has a problem with a random stall on take off. It's been a few days and I thought all was good but today it cut out and died. Is there anything else that can be going on here besides the carb?

If there is an EGR system, make sure the vacuum routing is correct. The EGR TVS should get its vacuum source from a timed port on the carb. If the source is a constant manifold vacuum, the EGR may be opening when you don't want it. Likewise, you'll want to verify the vacuum connection to the distributor advance.

Should there be vacuum to the EGR valve at idle? I wouldn't think so but there is on this car. When I pull the vacuum line, at idle, it runs a little bit smoother. Would it harm anything if I disabled the EGR valve for awhile to see if the stalling comes back?

Re: 81 El Camino V-6 carb problems

Well, it's been a while but I pin-pointed a pattern to the stalling problem. It only croaks when going downhill for some reason. I can only think that the carb would still be at fault here, but I can't think why.

Anyone else have a clue for me?

This is hard to diagnose without having the car in front me. If you can pull the top of the carb off easily enough, re-check the float level and take sure it can swing full travel.
