Axel replacement
Well, a quick AAR of the Axle job...
If the book says 1-7/16" beleive it!!! I went to several fourms to find the info and everybody says "It's wrong it's 1-1/4" socket" well all I grabbed was that size and what do I find? Yeah, it's 1-7/16". The jacking of the wheel assembly and dropping with something jammed to break the ball joint worked well but not a 1/2" wrench as thought. The angle of the lower and joint on a 96 isn't condusive to a clean break. I ended up using a 14mm deep well socket (less damage to the rubber) and it worked fine. One person job except to seat the axle in the bearing housing and tranny, needed someone on the other end "convincing" the unit with a hammer to seat the axle. It wasn't as bad as I thought it would be, it took 2 hours the first side and 1.5 the second. Runs like a champ and the wife dosn't complain about the knocking anymore. If you have to do the job, take your time and read thru the steps in the manual... |
