Yeah You're right! They used a very heavy fuel derrived from coal...the same stuff the Nazi Stukka fighter planes used. But they did use the M10 motor...the 60's BMW 1600 to the 80's 318, they all use the M10 engine, its all in there in the bmwworld:

I'm pretty sure they used a 1500 block, and there is a difference between that and the M10 of 2002 fame. My mechanic told me, so...
