Re: The Official: "There's no such thing as a dumb question about the McLaren F1" thread

Before you guys assume the red car under construction is #004 or #021, based on the photo, the red car being built was XP4.

The user 'Fender130173' who posted this used to work at Mclaren Cars back in the 90's. He said:

"The chassis in red was XP4 (4th prototype). This pic is so rare as the car eventually ended up blue... And the story goes like this..

Ron Dennis came into the workshop and saw XP4's chassis painted red and said "Get it re-sprayed it looks like a Ferrari!" and so it ended up blue!"

Re: The Official: "There's no such thing as a dumb question about the McLaren F1" thread

I want to know how much do standard F1 go around in auction,if I somehow get I will surely buy one?

And I never knew that XP4 was red initially,Thank you for sharing that info?

I also wonder if stock F1 can do better than 1:21.2 at right hands.

Presently you should expect to pay about $12M for almost any F1 and more than that for certain examples. There might be a few GTR "bargains" still around that could be had under $10M, perhaps, but the trend of them being less expensive than the road cars has been reversing rather rapidly.

The 1:21.2 time you have quoted relates to what circuit? If Tsukuba, it was in the hands of Naoki Hattori and he's certainly capable.

1:21.2 was for bedford autodrome.

I know Naoki is good driver but the weather in the tsukuba lap was looking damp(I could see relection of headlights in the video)and it was done in 92% humid weather and I think he was cautious in driving it considering that it was very expensive.Anyway it was an impressive lap.Tsukuba lap was 1:04.62(humid) and 1:12(wet).

Also I wanted to know if F1 has lapped estoril ,zeperfs say
that it did estoril in 1:55.9 and is in 3rd place, but I doubt that it is legit.

Also what is the high downforce mode in mclaren F1 and what are the downforce figures in that mode?

Which chassis of F1 GTR has kokusai kaihatsu livery other than 1R(I noticed that it does not have head lights in the middle of the bonnet)?

In which races has F1 GTR short tail raced other than BPR(including le mans),British GT and JGTC

That is still a photo of 01R - taken at Le Mans in 1995 prior to the start of the race. It did not start the race with the extra cornering lamps - that bonnet piece was swapped in during a pit stop as night fell.

Someone other than McLaren ended up with the car's original bonnet panel.

Re: The Official: "There's no such thing as a dumb question about the McLaren F1" thread

I have a question about a book of F1.On ebay I found 2 books
1.Mclaren F1 GTR LM Performance Portfolio
2.Mclaren F1 Sportscar Road Test
If anyone has read those books than can you tell me what contents are included in those books so that I can know which one is better to purchase.

If I remember correctly they are a collation of some of the magazine articles produced on the F1 (my minds a little rusty and the books are a little dusty however....)

Re: The Official: "There's no such thing as a dumb question about the McLaren F1" thread

This is something I have always wanted to figure out, and now I think I am pretty close to connecting the dots, but a few blanks still exist. I think we all know that there is fan assisted down force increasing feature built into the F1. The fans are located at the front of the engine bay, and somehow suck air from bottom of the car to remove the boundary layer and increase the efficiency of the diffuser. I have attached a picture showing the fans in the front upper corner of the engine bay, and one showing the underside where the air is taken from. My question is how does it get from point A to point B. I assume that it travels through a passage that is built into the chassis which the ECU rests against, since this device apparently also doubles as a method of cooling the electronics. I have attached a third picture with the rear removed and what appear to be an opening in the lower rear of the engine bay. If that is the passage, how does air get from the diffuser to there, a hose like the break cooling lines? Or is there something built into the inside of the diffuser that connects the two? And what is the route that the passage takes through the chassis?

Here is the fan at the forward end of the engine bay, the valve cover is visible, and that is a duct routing cooling air to the alternator...

And here is the underside of the car, the screen on the forward end of the diffuser is where the boundary layer is removed...

Re: The Official: "There's no such thing as a dumb question about the McLaren F1" thread

And finally this picture shows the fan housings at the forward end of the engine bay in the two upper corners. It seems as though the passages in the lower back corner of the engine bay are where the diffuser connects to the chassis to allow air to flow?
