Subaru leony noisy ticking please help

I own a 92 Subaru 1800 leony 4wd station wag 220k on clock. 4 the past few months I've noticed a ticking noise. Its sounds like something sticking but not sure. The noise goes away time to time. Cant tell if its comming from the tappets or another problem. Can t belts cause a noise like this or something else. The noise also differs in noise pitch can b loud n annoying n sometimes slighty there or goes away lol dont get it..

Welcome to the forum, stuwandy!
The noise you describe is known as TOD: tick of death. It is generally can be taken care of by the seafoam treatment. If you do not know how to do it let me know and I give you the detailed instructions. I just recently did it and it helped me a lot.
Another source of ticking is so called Mickey Mouse oil pump seal. It may be changed during the timing belt replacement. That brings me to a question about your timing belt. With that many miles on the car when was the last t-belt replaced? EA82 require 60,000 miles t-belts replacement.

I have a basic idea how to do that but yes could u please tell me those detailed instuctrions that would help alot. I couldnt tell u how many miles since last t-belt change. had the car 4 about 1yr now clocked a few k's since then say its due tho. Did u have the same model or relevent to my problem must b a common prob in these models.

Since it is 92, I assume that you have EA82. The model should be stamped somewhere on the engine. For more information you can go to www.ultimatesubaru.net. Go to “Older Generation Subaru” You will find tons of information there.

For the Seafoam.
Read instructions on the can. I have decided to clean my intake manifold. Some people recommend putting Seafoam through the hose from the PCV valve.
Start the engine.
Pull the hose off the valve. Stick it into the can. Do it little by little to not to hydro lock your motor!
The vacuum will suck in the Seafoam.
You will probably need another person to keep the car running because it will try to stall. But you most likely will be able to do it yourself by slightly turning the gas dial in the engine bay yourself with one hand. I had a helper.

You will see a lot of black smoke coming out of the exhaust. Keep doing it. Your car will appreciate it afterwards.
After the can is empty shot the car down and let it seat for 10-15 minutes.

One more detail. My PCV hose was hard as rock and I was not able to bend it even slightly. So I disconnected it at another end at the T. You will know what I am talking about when you look at your hoses. I borrowed a tiny funnel from my grandson and poured Seafoam in. Little by little.

Well, the results were great. I had had severe pinning problems before. The car wanted only 91 octaine gasoline. Now I run on 87 without any problems.

Now for the timing belt.
Since EA82 in non interference engine you will not have big problems even if it brakes. Only inconvenience. So it is up to you. The job itself takes me 4 hours to do. But that should be done in another post. This one is already too long.

I fixed my long annoying ticking. Since i live in australia i couldnt get a hold of the seafoam here. but i looked a several options on the market. i found a lifters supplement i which i added to my engine oil and worked like a charm soon i put it in the noise disapeared. Been goen 4 500kms so far.

I'm dealing with the DEATH TICK. I've added lifter treatment with no improvement and have a hard time believing a miss adjusted tappet could make such excessive noise. I've had 4 4wd GL's and none sounded like this. There is a big difference between the DEATH TICK and LOOSE TAPPETS.
My next step is the oil pump, either replace it or replace the gaskets which leak. Occasionally at idle the oil pressure drops down to the point of concern, usually when the engine temp is up, which makes sense as the viscosity has thinned. In my case everything points to the oil pump. will update .

Yes, usually when you replace a seal for oil pump, it may cure the problem. The seal gets sucked in and lets some air in.

The bad thing is you have to go through timing belts, but that is your choice...

After a long time finding this fault. The main cause of the prob is the o Ring in the oil pump. Replace that seal or the whole unit you should be laughing.
