Re: 1996 trans sport transmission swap
Are the plug patterns I have shown reminiscent of something in your car? AT leat, it tells what the wires you have are expecting at the transmission end. I'll go for details of the 2002 4T40 ifno one comes with that . THere is a trannyman not far and a GM dealer too. NOt a big deal.

Re: 1996 trans sport transmission swap
I'll go for the details ASAP. given the fact that the 4T60 had 2 plugs with 7 contacts (one for solenoids, one for reading the PRNOD21 status, I would guess they have grouped that into one single 14 pin connector on the 4T40....DO youstill have 2 plugs on the 4t40 or only one?

Re: 1996 trans sport transmission swap
ok i GOT THIS from a GM dealer about the 4T40.
www.avigex.ca/xport/4t40_1.jpg www.avigex.ca/xport/4t40_2.jpg www.avigex.ca/xport/4t40_3.jpg THis comes from a 2002 Alero model, because there are no references about the T40 being used on any Transport or Montana models... There are a lot of differences in the control. From the graphics www.avigex.ca/xport/transaxle.jpg about 4T60 and those here, here are some clues: Terminal E on 4T60 corresponds to terminal E on the 4T40: NO PROBLEM Terminal B on 4T60 corresponds to terminal T on the 4T40: NO PROBLEM Terminal F on 4T60 corresponds to terminal A on the 4T40 Terminal G on 4T60 corresponds to terminal B on the 4T40 tHESE THO CORRESPOND TO 1-2 SHIFT AND 2-3 SHIFT. BUt on 4T40, they are labelled A shift and B shift. I supposed a is 1-2 and B is 2-3......logical....but...may be it is the opposite........ NOw there are 2 terminals left..and here, the labelling is not the same: on the 4T60, this solenoid is labelled Torque COnverter CLutch, while on the 4T40, it is labelled Pressure COntrol....WOW ..This is really not the same thing...... I have really a problem with this one However Terminal A on 4T60 is 12 v supply and so is terminal C on the 4T40 Terminal D on 4T60 is ground and so is terminal D on the 4T40 IN regard to the transmision contacts 4t40_3.jpg that feed the PCM with information about the transmission status, there is no valid 1 for 1 contact equivalent. diagram for 4T60 here www.avigex.ca/xport/4t60_3.jpg Maybe TRANNYMAN can add some clues to this.....but for me, my conclusion is harsh and simple: it is not compatible with the transport PCM. |

Re: 1996 trans sport transmission swap
NO...wait a little: about 4t60_3 and 4T40_3, the equicvalents are simple:
Bto B C to C A to D D to A I'll come back about contacts shown on 4T40_2.... |

Re: 1996 trans sport transmission swap
..OK all these contacts on page 4t40_2 are the extra signals of the 4T40 that make the plug to show 14 contacts instad of 7....these extra contacts have simply nowhere to go on the transport PCM.....
Edit dec 13 2005:...Thanks mhartke for the additional technical details. Last edited by LMP; 12-13-2005 at 07:31 AM. |

Re: 1996 trans sport transmission swap
well for one the 4t40e has a electronic controlled pressure control solenoid and the 4t60e does not. These two transmissions are completely different when it comes to the controls. the computer in your car won't be able to control the 4t40e. You need to put a 4t60e back in.
