Ferrari 599 SA Aperta

I just completed this one last week, Revells Ferrari 599 SA Aperta.

The kit was typical Revell, nice details, some fitting problems, strange wheels.
I really wanted to have this car painted in Giallo Tristrato, but couldn't find any such paint. So I went for Zero Paints Giallo Orion, which is a Lamborghini colour, but according to all my reference pictures it's a pretty close match. It requires quite a lot of layers to paint, grey primer, white primer, yellow ground, "sparkling" base, TS13 gloss clear to sand and polish.
Interior is painted semigloss black with yellow stripes, which I scanned from the decal sheet and printed in yellow on white decal paper. The stripes got too wide though, as they were very difficult to cut out.
The engine lid was twisted (typical Revell) and I couldn't make it to fit properly, so I had to equip the car with 4 flat neodymium magnets. Now the lid fits tight!
The rims looked ok, they are just painted semi-gloss clear and flat clear to decrease the shine of the chrome. The brakes didn't look like any of the reference pictures at all, so they had to be changed, the tires seem to be too narrow and too high, but Tamiyas 360 Modena tires looked quite small, so I used the Revell tires for now. The front ride height had to be corrected by 2-3 mm.
The rear "window" has to be replaced by some thin clear plastic part, otherwise it looks like bullet-proof glass.
The headlights and the c-pillars wouldn't fit into the body without some trimming.
I also used the Hobby Design P/E detail set, which had to be adapted in some places to fit the SA Aperta, and some further emblems, wires, seat belts etc.
Enough talk, here are some pictures. Any comments are welcome.

And a shot of the whole 599 family.

Cheers
Alex

Re: Ferrari 599 SA Aperta

Super build!
I love the colors. It looks great.

I had the same problem on my 500GTO with the hood and used magnets too.

Great looking family there too!

Nice. Very, very nice

Once I get my F12 done, I'll be building a GTO and Aperta.

Guess I better get cracking! Thanks for the information.

Wow. I'd not followed the progression of the 1:1 599s. This-and yours look really beautiful. I still need to get the GTO:/

Really nice build! Spectacular 3 stage pearl yellow paintjob!

May I ask you if your Ferrari 599XX is derived from the Ferrari 599 GTO Revell kit? On the web I can't find a specific 1/24 kit for the Ferrari 599XX. The front bumper, for example, is totally different from the one on the 599 GTO.

No, this is the Hobby Design Transkit (based on Fujimi kit), as is the GTO by the way. Both were finished some time ago, the GTO about one year before Revells GTO was released.

Re: Ferrari 599 SA Aperta

Hi,

looks great, especially when you consider the problems with Revell AG-kits.

Is there an engine in the model? I think it should, otherwise using magnets for the twisted lid makes no sense.

One wiper seems to hang in the air (2. photo), maybe it can be bent to place.

Family photo is impressive!

Hi Micha,

I noticed the bent wiper during the foto session and could fix it, so it's ok on the other pictures. I just forgot to do that angle again.

Yes, there is an engine underneath.

Sure can!
As I said, It's the HD tkit for the Fujimi kit. Building it was a nightmare, nothing fits at all, but once you're through it looks quite nice.
The colour is a Zero-Paints light green metallic custom mix (TS22 metallic), Tamiya flat black on the roof and the grey decal from HD's sheet.
Enjoy!

Re: Ferrari 599 SA Aperta

That green is amazing.
Do you have any WIP threads?

Dang that thing looks good.
I don't have the balls to paint it green, but I wish I could say I did.
....wouldn't change a thing either.

Too good!

Great looking build,it sucks that licensing with the tire company's has resulted in people having to raid other kits for proper rubber.
