1996 Yukon Power Steering
I have a 1996 Yukon with 4wd. When I turn the truck to the right, the power steering gets extremely tight. Meaning that I can turn the steering wheel just a little , the truck wants to turn alot, and the steering get very, very easy. This does not happen all the time. I can turn the truck off and it seems to reset itself. All will be fine for a while.
Any Ideas? |

Re: 1996 Yukon Power Steering
I had a similar problem w/my 97. GMC developed a variable power steeering pressure system to limit pressure a high speeds to reduce the lickelyhood of rollovers. Unfortunately, the system is seriously flawed. The vary the pressure of the system with a valve in the power steeeeering pump which is controlled electrically. What is probably happening is the control or the valve is screwed up. I got sick of it and disconnected the wires to the pump and installed a good old steering stabilizer shock and I love it. No more problems, smooth predictable steering. This is a classic example of GM messing with a good thing and causing problems.
Good Luck |

Re: 1996 Yukon Power Steering
This module, I bought mine from HELP part #31025
About an hour to replace. Slide seat fully back Disconnect neg ground for at least half an hour to Disable air bags. Remove 15mm nut to separate steering shaft just before it goes through firewall under the dash. Push shaft off towards, (through the) fire wall. The device is in a grey housing concentric to the shaft, Carefully work back the three plastic clips and the disk will come free Carefully remove locker (a plastic insert) and unclip junction to device lead. Slide off disk The plug will slide out if you tease it through carefully. Clean shaft with electronic cleaner Install new sensor the brass goes towards the steering wheel. There is a slot in the top of the gray housing to locate the wires Tease the coupling back into position reattach and insert lock Click the sensor in place Reinstall shaft and bolt. |
