R12/R134 conversion

Anybody got any reliable writeups on how to do the conversion,or at least where I can find a writeup??

Thanks but not what I'm looking for..Thouhgt maybe someone had a step by step on converting from R12 to the 134 freon...There are kits out there but they aren't that clear..I know I'll have to buy a part but not sure which one

I use Red Tek 12A myself, does not need any kind of retrofit at all. It is not compatible with r12 or 134a gas, but it is compatible with both of the systems, just let the gas out and fill it up with red tek. Sealer and oil also available, or get the whole kit.

Where can 12a be purchased? I am looking to recharge my r12 system and do not want to deal with the cost of conversion.

Some of the Dual Replacement gasses are propane based. They work very well and actually cool better than the freon based gasses.

No safety concerns either.

I think that is what that Red Tek 12a gas is that 89ltd was refering to.

It is my understanding that R12 is no longer available and has been taken off the shelves....
Red Tek 12 A is this normally sold at parts stores....or is it one of those
items that only Tibetan monks only allow off their compound every third blue moon.....

you would have to call around, I am in Windsor Ontario, Canada so things are different here, we can't even buy 134 without a license. Red Tek 12a is suppose to run cooler than R12.

Purchase Your R12/R134 conversion

I recently purchased a conversion kit from Walmart (in California and should be offered in most states).

It offers three cans of 134a, adaptors, gauge w/hoses, instructions and a DVD/CD with step by step instructions.

The conversion was simple.

Go to (most any) service shops and ask them to evacuate your R-12 freon (most will do this for free, as R-12 is almost gold to them). Then attach the adaptors and charge your system to the required amount of 134a.

I have a very cold Jeep now.

You can buy retro fit kits at any auto parts stores.
You should replace the accumulator before you do the conversion and yes you need to get rid of the r-12 in the system.
I have done quite a few conversions and it's very easy.
BTW you are converting to R-134a

I'm converting to HC12a. I had the R12 reclaimed and now I need to know how to charge it with the HC12a.

89ltd - How have you been charging yours? I purchased a kit with two cans of HC12a and a filler hose. I'm assuming the hose attaches to the low side. Its the only fitting that it will connect to. My question is how do you open the valve? When I connected to hose to the fitting nothing happened and I probably wasted a can. I need your help! Thanks.

the kit I have, uses a hose with a tap valve on the top,, after screwing on the can of freon, I turned the tap on the top and this pushes down and will pierce the can, then when you , hook it up to the low side and open up the valve on top of the can. Just make sure when you screw the can on, the sharp end that pierces the can is all the way up, other wise you will loose everything. The engine should be running with the a/c on max position while it is taking on the gas, any more questions let me know. With my Red Tek 12, the can should be upside down, with the hose on the botton while you are charging your system.
