Pajero transmission

Has anyone had trouble removing a Pajero transmission to change a clutch. I can start to remove it but something will not let it slide back from the engine anymore than fingerwidth. If some pressure is applied it springs back. I have checked and the outside of the transmission is free from obstacles. In theory it should slide straight back to get at the clutch. Has anyone had a similar problem?
