WHat to buy - 3kGT VR4 or 300zx 2+2

I have the choice of buying a pretty nice 93' 3000gt vr4 with an upgraded 6 speed manual tranny, and 99K miles on it for 5,500 or I can get a 90' zx 2+2 with 117K (60K maintenance was done) for roughly the same price (about 4,800)...

Now here's where I'm torn. I live in chicago, so RWD is gonna be a bitch if I get caught with it in the snow, and the vr4's got awd, however it really hasn't snowed much in Chicago this season. The vr4's more prone to have parts go bad but it's got less mileage, however insurance costs are gonna blow, and same thing for gas mileage... This car will be a daily driver to school and back and out to la grange each weekend so I'm looking at about 100+ miles a week. Now, granted both cars have enough power to satisfy me (although the VR4 really gets me hard ) and both cars have enough space to haul around my guitar equipment... If I get the VR4, I'm pretty sure I'd try to sell it for more come spring and buy something different, or maybe not...

If you were in my situation what would you do?? Thanks for your time and responses.

well its a tough one. the 2+2 looks kinda weird compared to the regular model and they don't come in twin turbo setups. so performance wise, the Z loses hard. but the Z has a much nicer interior and looks much better and is more reliable.

if your planning to sell the car shortly after, i would get the VR4 so you wouldn't have to deal with the headaches when things starts to break.

When it comes to realability it really depends on how much maintenance was done to the VR4, since the owner of the 300zx claims that he did extensive maintenance. However, it is apparant that he put in a transmission from a newer VR4 1994+ and since trannys are the most potentially proplematic part of an AWD vehicle that irons out most of the problems, I don't know any other problems the 3000GT VR4 has.

If I were you I would go with the 3kGT VR4, but that is just me. If you want a fun RWD sports car which is slightly more practical, that can probably hold its own in snow with snow tires, is probably cost less in maintenance in the long run and is cheaper when it comes to insurance, even though you can probably put in a turbocharger without them knowing, go with the 300zx. It pretty much comes down to if you want to shoot for the highest performance vehicle your money can buy or something a smidge more frugal and probably just about as fun as a daily driver.

Well, I actually like the looks of the 2+2, it's a big longer than the 2 seater, which is nice, and if I do get that i do plan on TTing n.e.ways...

The problems with the VR4 are usually that of the drivetrain, aka driveshaft and transfer case.

Yea, I'm worried about maintenance with the VR4, but I'm thinking that I'll only have it for winter and than re-sell it, so I think I'll get the VR4 and than with the money that I make from that, get a nice 2+2 with lower miles later on down the road.
