Distributor cap gasket

Hi, guys:

Run into something on my '96. There's a gasket (can't tell if it's fiber, or rubber that's turned INTO fiber!) that goes between the cap and the mating surface of the distributor. While cleaning the interior of the distributor (the oil seal leaks, slightly), I finally tore up that gasket.

Doesn't seem to be anything about it online. I suppose I can put a bead of RTV all around the cap, but I'd rather just get a new gasket.

Anyone have a source?

Re: Distributor cap gasket

You may be able to pick one up at the local Chevy dealership. It, would be difficult to find. I would go with the RTV.

Re: Distributor cap gasket

I'm pretty sure that this gasket is mostly to keep dust and moisture out. Very handy if you like to wand wash your engine often as I do.

It is rubber. The other gasket in the picture is metal and goes between the head and dizzy.

Re: Distributor cap gasket

Yes, I agree that it's there simply to keep crud and moisture out. So it IS rubber... lol. Well, mine isn't, at least anymore.

I've got all the busted pieces. I think the thing to do is glue it into the slot with RTV, then just lube it up with silicone grease (to keep stuff out) before I put the cap back on.
