Moms needs help changing alternator belt

Ok...so I've never done this before and I need help.

If you want to send me your email address, I can email you pictures.

I need to put on an alternator belt. The old one broke off.

I have a 1995 Trooper.

I don't have one of those long belts that goes around all the pulleys.

I have like 3 or 4 belts.

So where is the tensioner?

Do I need to go under the truck?

I need to find the tensioner and I think this belt goes around the fan pulley, harmonic balancer pulley, and the alternator pulley.

Please help.

Should be 3. (1. Power Steering Pump (P/S) 2. Alternator (Alt) & Fan, 3.Aircond (A/C))

From memory - you'll need to remove the P/S belt first. The pump has a 14mm [edit - pivot] bolt under the pump (and above the alt) - it's accessed thru' the holes in the pump pulley. [edit - The lock bolt is clearly visible in the adjustment slot].

Yes (under) - removing the splash-guard (2 x 12mm bolts) will make access easier.

It's under the alternator. The tensioner has a 12mm lock bolt screwed into a block of metal thru' which the tensioner is threaded. The tensioner is 10mm. Loosen the lockbolt. Slacken-off the tensioner. Fit new belt - then re-tighten and lock.

Re-fit P/S belt - the tensioner is a 1/2inch square hole on the upper end of the bracket (lever it with an appropriate 1/2" drive). Tighten the lock bolt and then the 14mm [pivot]-bolt.

Correct.

Re: Moms needs help changing alternator belt

I LOVE YOU

Any idea on how I can avoid getting as dirty as I'm gonna get when I fix this thing?

No worries, I'll deal...I need to get to work on Monday.

Have an awesome weekend!

It's always a good idea to wear mechanics gloves (cheap from auto spares shops) to protect your hands. Protects from cuts & bruises & grease.

Thanks - I already have - it's Sunday evening down-under!

Slight amendment about the P/S pump - the lock bolt is clearly visible in the adjustment slot - it's the 14mm PIVOT bolt that is accessed thru' the pulley:

Ahhh, thanks so much for the visual.

Those bolts look mighty hard to get to.

I can tell that's it's gonna be an all-day repair for me.

Thanks again,

Brandyboo

Re: Moms needs help changing alternator belt

Do I need to remove the fan first? Seems like it would allow easier access if I did.

Thanks,

Re: Moms needs help changing alternator belt

Ok, guys...and gals

All I need to know now is how to adjust the a/c pulley so that I can remove the a/c belt. I loosened the bolt on the middle pulley...but I can't get the damn thing to move!

Thanks,
Brandyboo
