First CAR, Maine = Snow... HELP!

Hello!

I found these forums and I am 17 and don't know alot about cars. I have about 4,000 dollars to spend on a car.

This is what id like
-Sporty
-2 door
-GOOD in snow (not like 95 inches, but after roads get plowed after a storm... shouldnt be hard to drive in except for handling, spinning out, spinning around lol)
- Fast off the line ( dont dare to speed, but love to race off the line)

Cars I have looked at are : Dodge Stealth, Eclipses, Celicas, and mazda MX6's, Eagle Talons

I prolly like the Stealth first then, Celica, Eagle talon, Eclpise, mazda

Out of those cars, what would be the best, keeping in mind what id like. Are their certain years of those cars I just DON'T want to buy for some reason. Most any car I get for 4 grand will have alot of miles, so will the car last at all after I get it, like how many miles on the cars is just TO many. When I'm lookin at these cars is there something on the car that tends to go, that I should watch for?

IE: Brakes wear out quick etc.

Any help would be great, and if you think all the cars I mentioned would suck, name one, and why it would be good for me, rember sporty 2door CAR! If at all possible, but my mind is open!

Please help, im going to look at a 92 Eagle Talon TSI tomorrow, cd player, 2 subs, 72k miles for 2,500 I just need to know if its any good in snow!

A talon will be fine in the snow as long as you put on good snow tires. There are plenty running around here in northern Michigan. We get at least as much if not more snow then you guys do. (When I was in Hougton, we'd get just over 300 inches a season)

Stay away from rear-wheel drive cars if you want it to handle good in the snow. That is unless you like to do doughnuts and fishtail around every corner and have the back end spin around to the front when you slam and lock up the brakes on a rear-wheel drive car. I used to live in Buffalo, NY and my father had a rear-wheel drive car (can't remember what kind) and we would be all over the road in that thing. Front wheel drive cars are great in the snow as long as you take it easy and don't go faster than you should be going for the conditions and leave lots of room between you and the next car (people don't understand these things in Cincinnati, though).

I'm assuming the stealth is a rear-wheel drive car, so that rules out that one. Anyway, what kind of Stealth do you think you can get for $4000. On kbb.com, even the oldest one a '91 with manual transmission and no options and 90,000 miles, it's over $5,000. So I'd say keep dreaming on the Steath.

Even the other ones, you are going to have to get either a pretty old one or one with lots of miles (and then less reliable). In 1998, I paid $5000 for a 1992 Mercury Tracer (sister car to a Ford Escort) with lower mileage (I think around 50,000) and it was falling apart.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but $4000 is not a lot for a car, even used. I'm planning on replacing mine in a year or so and I'm expecting to spend about $25,000 (but it will be new). If I were you, I'd be more concerned with reliability at your age, because I doubt that you can afford many repairs after you buy the car. I'd say start off with Civics or Corollas.

I will buy a car that will run for 2 years and thats all I want about it, stealth is a front wheel drive car, with 144k miles, listed for 3.8 on KBB

I looked at that talon, complete POS. So didn't buy.

Im going to look at some celicas, those can have 140k before I even think to get scared of the mileage.

Anyways when I get a car ill letcha all know what i got and how its goin for me.

If you spend $4000 on a car that lasts you 2 years, that's $2000 a year (which is $167/month). If you put that $4000 down on a new car and got 0% interest (maybe not possible for a 17 yr old, but possible for someone with good credit) and then paid the $167/month for 5 years, you could buy a car for $14000. You could get a nice, dependable Corolla with 0 miles and a 3 year warranty. And your insurance would be cheaper because it's a nice new car with more safety features than a sports car like a Stealth.

Just a thought. But I know I was 17 once and that would never happen. Even when I bought my first new car at 21, I chose looks/styling/performance over reliability/dependability.

On second thought, screw it, you're only young one so buy the fastest, sportiest car you can and maybe it will help you pick up chicks

Ok change of plans.

My dad says a sports car would be way to much to insure. I already have 1 accident and 1 speeding ticket and im 17.... yea...

Its $900 every 6 months for me to be insured for my dads Saab 9000 turbo CSE '97

He thinks if I go buy a 92 celica, with 100,000 miles on it. That my insurance will be like 1,400. How he thinks this makes no sence to me, I guess because its a "sports car" Anyone think that this is true?

So now im looking at 4door cars, that are frontwheel or all wheel drive. I dont want my car to look like crap so something I could put a body kit on would be nice.

Any new ideas?

And is there any insurance place I can type in the type of my car, year etc and my age accidents etc.... and get a ruff estimate, without having a VIN number because I dont have any ...
