Unhappy 95 Cutlas Cierra SL 3100 V6

New user here. Searching the threads for the same issues is undaunting.

95 Cutlas Cierra SL, 3100 V6. Have replaced wires, plugs, and fuel filter. Purchased an OBD1 & II reader, but reader does not connect with car computer.

Problems: Engine struggles to start, almost choking. Will run at idle for about 1-3 minutes and starts to die. Will catch itself sometimes; other times it just dies. Also, when it is at idle speed, if you put it in reverser or drive, it dies.

What else do I need to check for?

Thanks.

Re: 95 Cutlas Cierra SL 3100 V6

Welcome to AF!!

Your 95 is probly a hybrid ODB 1.5. Some stupid idea by GM, imagine that. lol

I would check your fuel pressure.
Also check the FP regulator in the front of the feul rail.
If you pull the vacum line off of the regulator and it smells like gas or is dripping then thats the culprit.

Might also pull out the IAC(idle air control valve) and see if its all carboned up.

When it stalls when put in gear; is this happening when engines cold, or when its warmed up, or both ??

Red face Re: 95 Cutlas Cierra SL 3100 V6

Thanks! i will check the fuel pressure and the regulator. One thing I noticed when I changed the spark plugs is that I smell gas when I pulled one or two of them.

The car stalls cold and warmed up. Any further thoughts on that?

Re: 95 Cutlas Cierra SL 3100 V6

gas fumes could be those injectors are sticking open flooding the cylinder after you shut if off.
Or it could be part of your ignition system isnt working properly thus not burning all the fuel.

Since you mentioned you had replaced the plug/wires Id lean toward the injectors sticking.

On the stalling could be the Idle air control valve-IAC clogged and not working right. And or some other ignition component is failing, like the coils or ignition control module-ICM

The IAC is on the side of the throtle body, sometimes you can remove it and clean it and the IAC port with TB cleaner.
Just dont push or twist the tip of the IAC or you can damage it! They are pricey, around $65.

Here is a thread that has pics, that you might find helpful.
