Unhappy '90 z32 automatic transmission

Last summer I traded my 95 Eclipse for a 300zx, and in my mind it is still the smartest deal I've ever made. However, the car had some tranny trouble, its automatic transmission seems to skip second gear. I've heard this is a common problem in early z32s, as they used a very soft metal to fabricate the gears, I have also heard that the swap to 5-speed is too cost prohibitive? Lastly i have heard that nissan used the z's tranny in some infinitis, true or false? I would appreciate any knowledge on where I might acquire a dirt cheap tranny to get my white z terrorizing the Massachusetts highways again, as a college student's bankroll doesn't support a $2500 rebuild.

Re: '90 z32 automatic transmission

Swapping in an MT? Not worth it, buddy. Better off buying a Z with MT already... The Nissan Z32 and the Infiniti J30 shared the same motor and tranny... but it's greatly reduced to LUXURY and not SPORTSCAR tuned. Dirt-cheap tranny? Good-Luck! The cheapest I can find is for $1,000...

Re: '90 z32 automatic transmission

I heard that the JDM VG30's are not as built as the USDM versions... they tend to break down easily.

swapping an AT to a MT isn't that cost prohibitive, provided you do the swap yourself. I had the same problem in my 90 NA and eventually the car became undrivable and forced me to replace it. i bought everything new except for the tranny(obviously) and the pedals(brake/clutch), and my swap only cost me about $1000...and that included shipping(since i'm overseas shipping is real expensive). so i'd say check ebay for a tranny or start calling local junkyards and see if they have one. if you want more info on what's required for the swap, either contact me or check out this site. they sell a whole kit of everything you need for $1850(TT transmission). hope this helps

Cool Re: '90 z32 automatic transmission

The transmission in the J30 is the same as the 300zx NA (RE4R01A)
the transmission in the q45 is the same as the 300zx tt except for a friction
(RE4R03A)

Rebuild kits are the same number for the J30 and 300zx
Different kit numbers for the Q45 and J30

The J30 ECU is a 16 bit and the pre 93 300zx is 8bit (8bit have a removable eprom) with the 16bit to upgrade you must either use a daughterboard with a 512K chip or you can do a Nistune upgrade and will interchange with the right rom file which you can get at www.aaa-hiperformanceauto.com plus they handle the built autos
