Equinox Hesitating at 55km

Our 2006 Equinox AWD chugs when we get to and stay at 50-60 km range. The engine seems to run the same but its like the is some sort of resistance. It feel like I'm bouncing forward and backward. It does not seem like the engine is running poorly as every other speed the car runs great. We have been getting extremely poor gas mileage lately as well. A full tank may get us 300 km city and hwy mileage combined. Yikes!
We also have a grinding sound when the awd kicks in from the rear end of the car. Not sure if this might be part of the problem as well. Any help would be great.
