Re: radio problems

It is the anti-distortion circuitry that is built into the radio's internal amplifier. This is nothing new. Most, if not all factory GM radios have had such a feature for over 20 years. Most reduce bass when excessive clipping is detected to reduce distortion. Others just simply reduce the volume to the point that the distortion goes away. If installed correctly, you wouldn't lose any functionality by installing an aftermarket radio. The only thing that you may lose are the steering wheel controls. There are adapters available to retain the steering wheel controls, but they don't have a reputation for working very well.
