Power Steering Stiff after PepBoys touched it! HELP?!!!

Hello,

I own 2002 Saturn SL2 (75,000 miles). I got a alternator belt changed from Pepboys for $80 and after that my power steering became somewhat stiff. When I turn my steering wheel, I can hear the rubber sound. I really don't know how to describe the sound... Also, when I shift into park and move my steering wheel left and right, my RPM rises about 200. The rpm rises and falls with in 1000. But I'm wondering why my rpm rises little bit when I move my steering wheel. What can I do? Is this normal? Or should I go to Pepboys and complain?

Thank you

I would deffenitly take it back and let them know it didnt do it before you went there. I kont know if that has one belt or not but if not, they left a belt loose.
Just ask them to please look at it.
As for the rpm fluxuation, power stearing takes HP away from the engine and will cause an rpm jump, but not anything out of the ordinary of mabey 100 rpm fluxuation.

if the belt is loose, then your power steering pump won't get as much power as it should.

as for the revs climbing and falling, that's usual as the power steering pump uses the engine's power. so as you turn the wheel you're making the pump need power, which in turn uses engine power and drops revs, they'll climb and fall as the engine injects more fuel to keep the revs up.

take it back to where the work was done, if they caused a problem they have to fix it.
