1g or 2g head gasket?
putting the 1g head on my 7 bolt block. Iknow the head studs are smaller on the 7 bolt and bigger on the 6 bolt, but what im asking is do i buy the head gasket for the 7 bolt or go with the 1g gasket that has bigger holes? 2g head gasket i think is the one to go with correct?

The mls head gaskets i was looking at are only .059 thick, stock HG i measured from my head was .050, so not to much of a differents. What about the 4 layer metal gasket? why not use that, its .040 thicker than stock.

Re: 1g or 2g head gasket?
Metal head gaskets require a special finish on the cylinder head.. It needs to be milled to an RA-30 type finish. Supper smooth.

Re: 1g or 2g head gasket?
ok cool thanx, what about the copper head gaskets? so the 4 layer metal head gasket from mitsubishi is out of the question i guess. Its just that the mls is not much thicker than stock.

Re: 1g or 2g head gasket?
You can use the Mits OEM, just not a Cometic, HKS, exc. Copper spray is a gasket adheaver, it wont let the head gasket flex if it needs to..

Re: 1g or 2g head gasket?
For what it's worth, 1g and 2g HGs are identical. EVO8s are slightly different and are not interchangeable. Also interesting (I thought) the EVO comes with an MLS gasket stock. Sweet.

Re: 1g or 2g head gasket?
I always thought the coolant & oil passages were a little larger on the 1g gaskets..?..

Re: 1g or 2g head gasket?
I've always been under the impression that a metal head gasket needs a supper fine surface to adheave to. You're best to call SBR and ask them about the 4 layer MLS & copper gasket. I know my Cometic needs the RA surface job done to the head before it goes on!

Re: 1g or 2g head gasket?
The one I'm using for my car is the mitsu evo3 mls head gasket.

Re: 1g or 2g head gasket?
The mitsu MLS gasket doesn't need any special prep work, just the usual (very clean surfaces, I go over them with a razor blade for a good 20 minutes to make sure all of the old composite gasket is removed. another advatange to metal gaskets, cleanup is easier the next time around ). The Cometic and similar do need very smooth surfaces, at least with no orings. Too many poeple have learned this the hard way. Cometic recomends a finish RA of around 30 if I remmeber correctly. A good machinist will ask what type of gasket you plan to use before doing the resurface, mine always does.

Re: 1g or 2g head gasket?
So I just got my cylinder head sent out to a machine shop for my 1g eclipse. They told me they machined .008 off of the head cuz it was warped and hot tanked it and gave it a valve job, when I put it back in the car it started but the oil turned a chocolate milk color. I have a STM head gasket on it but I'm pretty sure it's dumping antifreeze into the oil. As it's started you can hear the coolant gargling down in. I'm stuck on what to do, some people say to junk my head because there's too much machined off, any suggestions?
