Any way to disable the transponder anti-theft device in a 1999 Sable?
So my wife lost the key to her Sable. She got a new one made up to match the VIN #, but we just found out that the keys have a transponder in it. Even if the key mechanically turns the ignition, when the key doesn't match the car, the car disables the ignition and gas pump.
So I'm wondering if there's a way to disable or bypass the transponder, or even the whole alarm system (she never uses it anyway). The alternatives are to have the car towed to the dealership and reprogrammed to match the new key/transponder (which neither of us have time for). If knows anything about this, I'd totally appreciate hearing it. Thanks in advance! In the meantime: |

Call around to other shops and maybe a locksmith: The key programming procedure can be done right in your driveway. It's a simple procedure on the wife's 2001 Pontiac Montana; anyone who truly knows Fords and Merc's can tell you how.
Try going to www.tauruscarclub.com and posting this question. Someone there is sure to know. |

Yeah you sure can program it yourself and very easy too. There's one problem. You have to have 2 working keys inorder to get the new key programmed.
This is what you do. You put the 1st old key in the ignition and turn the car to the run position. Have it there for about 3 seconds. Quickly take that key out and insert the 2nd key in and do the same. Then quickly take that one out and then start it with the new key. Then you are ready to go. That's why you need to have at least 2 keys already programmed in. If not, the dealer has to get into the computer and erase all the keys then program them all in. |
