abs brakes

the abs light came on . how can I check to see what wheel is sending the bad code without going to a dealer and paying through the nose to plug into the system ? ( 01 escape 3.0 4x4 )

Call your local parts places to see if they have a loan-a-tool program and if they have the code reader for brakes. You can do a visual check for some things. See if the anti-lock gear around the CV has any missing teeth. See if it is loose or out of place. See if the anti-lock sensor is loaded with metal fragments/shavings (it is a magnet). See if the sensor wire is broken.

ABS light can also be activated by a low brake fluid level condition. Top it up right to the line of it's low.

I would look at that first.
