1992 Passat GL problems...
1. My trunk wont unlock, normally the slot for the key is vertical, but now it's horizontal for some reaosn, and I can't open the trunk, the key will go in, but will not turn...any suggestions?
2. Engine temp light will not go off...I dont own an owners manual, so i'm guessing this is a sensor to tell if the engine over heating or not, but the light comes on as soon as I turn the car on, every time, never fails...bad sensor??? 3. power mirrors dont work, is there a fuse specifically for this somewhere? or a breaker? 4. can't hook up my JVC deck because evidently the speakers are all amped and on a common ground wiring system, just what the guy at the install bay at Future Shop told me...anyone know how to get around this? he said the only way would be to find out where the amp is, disconnect all the speakers, and rewire them to the harness...the harness I bought is for the car, but for some reason it wont work...anyone know where this mythical amp is hiding in my car??? I just bought this car a few weeks ago and these are all the bugs i've discovered thus far... |

Re: 1992 Passat GL problems...
1) Are you sure about the vert/horiz issue? Usually vertical is locked & horizontal will let the latch be engaged. If the lock cylinder won't rotate try varying the depth of the key in the cylinder as you try turning. Also put powdered graphite (available at key/lock shops) on the key & insert to lubricate the cylinder.
2) If temp light flashes it indicates low coolant level in reservoir. If its full, it's usually a bad level sensor. 3) Power mirrors are on fuse #14 4) If you have the AKTIV stereo system the amps are in the doors. Do a search on that topic to see various methods of aftermarket installs. Also, search on VW Vortex forum. |

thanx man, really appreciate all your info...i'll try it out tomorrow and give you an update...as for the stereo, I do have an AKTIV stereo and I did find the amps in the doors...all I did was use the harness I bought to power the deck and just reqired the dash and rear speakers with new line, and left the old line where it was...havent touched the door speakers yet, didnt have time...and as for the trunk, I just attached a cord and ran it into the backseat so all I have to do is pull on this string to open the trunk...

also, would you know if the #14 fuse is a 15A or not? because the fuse there is fine, but it's a new 15A one, not like the other fuses in there..

Re: 1992 Passat GL problems...
Fuse #14 for the mirrors should be 10A. If niether of the mirrors work, it's probably a bad switch unit. If you have amps in the doors & six speakers you have the dreaded AKTIV system. Do a google search "VW AKTIV stereo" and you can find many innovative ways to deal with your system.

so, if there's a 15A fuse in there, might that be malfunctioning the circuit?

Or, someone just replaced it with what they had in hopes it would fix it.

Re: 1992 Passat GL problems...
yeah, it works evidently...cuz my rear lights are working, but my power mirrors are not...so, it must be a bad switch unit...maybe too many amps in the curcuit fried it?

Re: 1992 Passat GL problems...
Fuse #14 (10A) is the power windows. There is also a "hidden" fuse called #43 (20A) located in a seperate holder just above the main fuse/relay panel.
