'89 B250 OD/Cruise problem

Hello all,

I have an '89 Dodge Ram Van B250. It just recently began giving me a hard time with the overdrive. Sometimes, when I start the van and hit the motorway, the overdrive refuses to engage. Also, when this happens the cruise control won't work either. I stop the van, power off, restart the engine and hit the road again, and sometimes everything returns to normal, but not always. Sometimes everything works great from the beginning.
Now, is it so that cruise control will only engage when you are on overdrive? Or is there a common but outside cause for this? Any idea what could be causing this behavior? Problem with grounding? Some vacuum hose somewhere? Misbehaving fuse?
I'm not a mechanic, but garages specialized in American cars here in Finland tend to be fairly expensive and rare.
