95 dodge ram wont turn over after tranny rebuild
Hello 1995 dodge ram 4x4 1/2 ton, Reverse went out of the transmission ( little check ball transmission cooler plugged up) we rebuilt the tranny, 46RH reinstalled it (a period of probably 2 months in between) we go to start it and you can hear the bendix kick in but it wont turn the engine. I had my son take the starter to autozone to have it tested, they said it tested fine, I had him pick up a new battery while he was there, put starter back in, same thing, so I am thinking the transmission is locked up so I take the inspection cover off and turn the drive shaft it turns smoothly no noise no hard spots, so I take and put a wrench on the front of engine and turn the engine over it turns over easy, I then left the starter sitting on the frame and turned the key it whirls over seems fine, put it back in place and bolt it up and hit the key, clunk only the bendix kicking in but the engine will not turn. I am supposing the starter is just weak ? without a load it turns ok but underload it just dont do it. Am I right ? or is there another relay somewhere I am missing ? or should I test the starter under load with a volt meter ? if so what should I be seeing ? thanks for any help.

If you bought from a discount parts store such as AZ, it's likely that you have a bad starter now. If you can turn it over by hand without bursting a bloodvessel, your starter should spin the engine.

Re: 95 dodge ram wont turn over after tranny rebuild
Hello Got it going, My son and his buddy put the tranny in, I finally crawled under the truck with the inspection plate off, so I could see if the starter was actually hitting the flywheel. The flywheel was spinning hahah, they didnt bolt the flywheel to the plate on back of engine. So 4 little bolts and cransk away. The little details arent so little sometimes
anyways thanks for all the help Jerry |
