94 VW Golf Check Engine Light

Hey can anyone help me. I just got my Golf III back from my mechanic and the check engine light comes on whenever I go below 2400 RPMs, but as soon as I get above that it goes off. Anyone know what might be causing this problem?

Re: 94 VW Golf Check Engine Light

To get the code you can use a simple jumper wire connected at the data link connector. The connector is located beside the ashtray, pull out the tray and slide the connector cover left. Turn on the ignition and insert the wire between pin #4 (top row fourth from left) and pin #15 (bottom row second from right) for about 3 seconds, then remove. The check engine light will begin to flash a series of four digit codes. e.g. code 2123 is 2 flashes pause 1 flash pause 2 flashes pause 3 flashes then a long pause between next code. Code 4444 is no problem found. It's not hard to do, so get them & post.

94 vw check engine light

I have a 95 golf iii. I am aware of the computer hook up spot next to the ashtray. Do your instructions for troubleshooting apply for the 95 as well? Where can I get a copy of what the codes mean?
Thanks!

It should be the same, I don't have a copy of the list on this computer (it's too long to type in manually) but I can tell you specifics.

Codes for Check Engine

Boschman,
I haven't had any specific problems regarding the check engine light(other than a leaky radiator and a non-functioning A/C unit) but the light has come on before. Another quick question: is there any way to lean the fuel mixture out on a 95 Golf 3? This car runs rich in my opinion based on the fact that I have replaced 3 catalytic converters and 3 exhausts from the cat-back in the 9 years I've had it. Any insight?
Any helo is greatly appreciated!

Re: 94 VW Golf Check Engine Light

It is basically set by the ECM, have you tried the oxygen sensor? Someone with a VAG-COM can help as it gives much more info than flash codes can.
