Rpm
Hello everyone,
I was wondering what the average rpm speed is at when doing 65 mph. I had recently purchased a used 1999 Mercury Sable with the 24 valve 6cyl motor and currently she runs at around 2500 which I think is high. It sounds like it does run through all the gears when shifting. Also when I turn the car off there is a whining sound that slowly slows down like a fan running or something. I guess what I'm really interested in knowing is what everyone else's rpm is at and different speeds. Thanks |

Re: Rpm
yes, that speed is normal, You must be used to larger pushrod engines that turn less rpm on the highway. Even with that highway engine speed, the duratec still gets excellent highway gas mileage.
Also, that fan sound is the electric fan for the radiator, it needs to be so large because the grille opening on the sable is so small. It needs to run a little bit after the car shuts off sometimes to prevent heat soak from the water pump not running.

That's what I initially thought. I guess I'm curious what other 24 valve Taurus/Sable owners what there RPM is showing at 55mph, 65mph, or 75mph. So I have something to compare it to.
Thanks for the response! Tim |
