1986 trooper won't idle

Recently got from a friend. Damn thing won't idle all the time. Sometimes it will kick up to 2000 rpm and drop down and idle nice. Most of the time it kills as soon as you step the clutch in. I see alot of electric solenoid in the carb does one of these control idle airflow? Confused. Repaired a vaccuum line, tightened up the plugs (fingertite), reworked the plug wires (didn't snap on). I pulled all the plugs out and they are all blackened up. Definently tell that is running rich. This is a carbureted model with electric choke. Please help

Re: 1986 trooper won't idle

Well you may want to turn the idle adjustment screw and see if maybe it's sticking. But if your wires won't snap in it my not be getting full spark to the plugs. If it stalls when you put it in gear it sounds like the extra load is killing it because of either lack of fuel or spark. It sounds like with black plugs, if they're stinking of fuel it's probably spark problems. Maybe even check resistance through the wires to ensure they're not bad too.

Re: 1986 trooper won't idle

I replaced the plug wires thinking the same as you. Although I found another thing. It will not idle only after it is hot. Like 10 miles or so. Since there is no computer I was thinking maybe an EGR valve or coolant sensor. The coolant sensor has 2 vaccuum lines hooked to it. Is it possible this wont allow proper vaccuum to the carb sometimes? I am lost on this one. It is also a electric choke. Is it possible this closes after warm.

Re: 1986 trooper won't idle

can you notice if the choke is opening after it reaches running temp. It may be stuck shut cuz the electric choke isn't working. It might be vacuum related but I disconnected almost all the smog vacuum crap and mine runs fine. Alot of those vacuum lines and sensors are all tied into the evap system and cold weather start and smog emissions so it might not cause too much problem.
