1996 Eclipse down shift problem

I have a 1996 Eclipse GS 2.0 liter non turbor with auto trans. The trans shifts fine when taking off from a start. When coming to a stop the trans seems to come out of gear, engine rpm go up slightly then back into gear after 5 seconds of complete stop. If I manualy down shift when coming to a stop everything works correcly. What tells the trans when to down shift? Could this be the VSS (Vehicle speed sensor)? If so Where is it located?

Not sure about auto but the 5spd is on the back of the tranny, its probably is somewhat of the same spot. You might want to check and change your tranny fluid to see if that helps.

Have you been doing Neturel Slams? Running if VERY hard then coming to quick stops? Sounds like one of your 3 gears is going bad, the autos If Im NOT mistaken are a 3 speed auto. Sounds like one of the gears are going bad. But dont quote me.
